Man Wakes Up From 48-Day Coma, Asks for Taco Bell

Jake Booth finally got his wish one week after he was cleared to eat, indulging in 8 1/2 Crunchy Tacos.

35-year-old Army veteran and former Sheriff’s deputy in Collier County, Florida, Jake Booth woke up from a 48-day coma with a very unusual first request: Taco Bell.

Booth’s older brother, Jason Schwartz, told For the Win, “He actually said, out loud, ‘I want Taco Bell.’ That was the very first thing he said.”

Booth finally got his wish almost a month after waking up, as it was 22 days before Booth was cleared by the doctors to eat solid food. He indulged in 8 1/2 Crunchy Tacos, and the expression on his face is priceless. A Facebook video by NowThis on Booth’s story has over 2 million views to date.

Though Booth’s story is heartwarming and inspiring, Schwartz says that his brother is still in the very early stages of rehabilitation. He hopes to raise $50,000 to help Booth’s family defray both the loss of Jake’s salary as he recovers as well as his medical expenses. Schwartz’s GoFundMe page has already raised over $15,000.

“I think a lot of people saw that video, and said, ‘The guy’s eating tacos, what does he need donations for?’” Schwartz said. “But the truth is, he has got years of therapy ahead of him. We really didn’t get a whole lot off almost two million hits, which is crazy. We want to make sure that people know he is not in the clear.”

Taco Bell got wind of Booth’s story and sent him a hand-written note and Taco Bell merchandise.
