Here’s one more reason to make that gooey grilled cheese sandwich during the bitter winter months: Kraft has announced that it has removed all artificial ingredients, including artificial preservatives, from its beloved Kraft singles.

“We know families today want convenient foods that have no artificial preservatives and a simpler, more recognizable ingredient list, and Kraft is working to deliver more of these options for some of our most beloved brands,” said Brian Gelb, Senior Associate Brand Manager, Kraft Foods.

Kraft claims that the new and improved cheese will look, feel and taste like it always had, but now customers will be able to understand all of the ingredients on the ingredients list. And that’s good news, considering that according to Kraft, nearly 4 out of 10 households buys Kraft cheese.

The news comes on the heels of the backlash against Subway and other fast food companies’ usage of the “shoe leather” chemical used in their bread products, The Daily Meal recently reported. After news broke and an online petition quickly was created, Subway has since agreed to remove the chemical.

Kraft removes artificial preservatives from cheese slices

NORTHFIELD, ILL. — As more companies buckle to consumer pressure over the use of controversial ingredients, Kraft Foods Group announced it has removed artificial preservatives from its Kraft Singles individually wrapped cheese slices.

The reformulated cheese products include American and White American flavors, but not the 2% milk varieties, and are now available in the dairy section of grocery stores nationwide.

“We know families today want convenient foods that have no artificial preservatives and a simpler, more recognizable ingredient list, and Kraft is working to deliver more of these options for some of our most beloved brands,” said Brian Gelb, senior associate brand manager for Kraft Foods. “Kraft is excited to deliver the same great tasting American cheese it always has with Kraft Singles — always made with real cheese, milk and no artificial flavors — and now with no artificial preservatives. It’s just simpler this way, and it’s the way cheese fans want it.”

Now made without sorbic acid as a preservative, the recipe tweak took Kraft about five years to achieve the taste and shelf life without the use of artificial preservatives, according to an Associated Press report.

The announcement follows Kraft’s November pledge to eliminate artificial yellow food dyes out of its character-based shaped varieties of macaroni and cheese sold in boxes starting in 2014. The company instead will use colors derived from spices such as paprika, annatto and turmeric. A petition on change.org asking Kraft to take artificial food dyes out of its macaroni and cheese products had accumulated more than 348,000 signatures by Oct. 31, 2013.

Earlier this month, Subway found itself under similar scrutiny when it revealed plans to remove azodicarbonamide, a dough conditioner, from its bread. The sandwich chain said it had begun the process to eliminate the additive, which is approved by the Food and Drug Administration, before petitions urged the change.


Kraft to Remove Artificial Preservatives, Synthetic Colors From Macaroni and Cheese

In response to a Change.org petition calling for the food manufacturer to make its iconic dish healthier without changing the taste, Kraft Foods Group has announced plans to begin removing artificial preservatives and synthetic colors from Macaroni and Cheese (also known as Kraft Dinner in Canada). Specifically the colors Yellow No. 5 and 6, the shades responsible for Macaroni and Cheese's easily recognizable, near-luminescent orange tint. Instead, Kraft plans to use paprika, tumeric, and annatto to try and restore the taste.

The changes will begin being made to the dish in early 2016. According to the Chicago Tribune, many of these artificial additives have already been removed from Kraft's special edition shaped pastas. Whether or not the price will rise remains unknown, although the prices on these shaped pastas haven't necessarily fluctuated in the wake of the additive removal.

While Kraft's Macaroni and Cheese dish takes steps toward being healthy, you can fantasize about eating a giant life-sized statue of Benedict Cumberbatch made out of 500 bars of Belgian chocolate.

Kraft Mac & Cheese Changed Its Recipe And No One Noticed

Your favorite childhood food got a surprisingly healthy update—three months ago. Kraft changed its Mac & Cheese recipe on the DL last December, ditching artificial flavors and colors in a big way.

That electric orange hue is no longer due to dyes yellow 5 and 6 (because what are those, even?)—paprika, annatto, and turmeric are keeping the food's vibrant color. Artificial flavors and preservatives are out in the new recipe, too, but one of the natural preservatives is sodium, as CNN points out.

The updates are an exciting improvement. "Over the years, people were telling us they wanted to feel better about the ingredients in the foods they eat and serve their families. At the same time, our loyal fans didn’t want us to mess with the iconic look or taste of their [mac & cheese]," Greg Guidotti, vice president of meal solutions for Kraft Heinz, tells SELF over email. "We saw the opportunity to improve our ingredient line."

The taste remains the same, says Guidotti—as evidenced by literally no one noticing over the past three months. Funny enough, though, the nutrition label hasn't been lying. The ingredients have been updated since the change was made, Kraft just haven't been advertising it till now.

"Since we knew that the new product tasted just as good as the old, we decided not to immediately shout the recipe change from the rooftops because we wanted fans to experience it for themselves without being prompted," says Guidotti. Fair enough—they actually announced that their classic Blue Box recipe would be changing last April. "We told our fans about the change in ingredients now, because their approval was the ultimate test," Guidotti adds.

So, if you've had a box recently, you've already taste tested the new recipe, along with 50 million other people (that's how many boxes have been sold since the switch). Kraft is dubbing this "The World's Largest Blind Taste Test." Is there a Guinness world record for that?

Kraft Singles to lose artificial preservatives

NEW YORK (AP) — Kraft is removing artificial preservatives from its most popular Singles cheese product variety, in the latest sign that companies are tweaking recipes as food labels come under greater scrutiny.

The change affects the company's Kraft Singles in the full-fat American and White American varieties, which Kraft says account for the majority of the brand's sales. Sorbic acid is being replaced by natamycin, which Kraft says is a "natural mold inhibitor."

Kraft's decision comes as a growing number of Americans pay closer attention to what they eat and try to stick to foods they feel are natural. That has prompted a number of food makers to change their recipes.

Last week, for instance, Subway said it was removing a chemical from its bread after a popular food blogger named Vani Hari started a petition noting the ingredient is also used in yoga mats.

The ingredient, azodicarbonamide, is an approved food additive and can be found in a wide variety of products, including those sold by McDonald's and Starbucks. But Hari said she targeted Subway because of its healthy food image.

Even though such ingredients are approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration, being able to tout a product as being free of them can be a selling point. Kraft, for example, plans to begin airing TV ads near the end of February touting that its Kraft Singles cheese product "begins with milk" and are now "made with no artificial preservatives."

The new Kraft packages, which began appearing on supermarket shelves in recent weeks, also come stamped with a red circle noting they have no artificial preservatives or flavors. Kraft says its Singles haven't used artificial flavors for many years, but that it just recently decided to advertise that aspect of the product.

"Consumers are looking for those less artificial cues and messages," said Gavin Schmidt, manager of cheese research and development at Kraft. "Those messages are more meaningful to consumers than they have been in the past."

Schmidt says the change took about five years to perfect because Kraft wanted to ensure the product's taste and shelf life remained the same. He declined to provide details, but said it wasn't as simple as swapping out an artificial preservative and replacing it with a natural one.

"There's a little more to it than that," he said.

Schmidt said Kraft is testing the removal of artificial preservatives from its other Kraft Singles varieties, but that it wanted to start with the most popular lines first. The changes do not affect Kraft Singles that are 2 percent milk, fat-free or other full-fat varieties.

Kraft Foods Group Inc., based in Northfield, Ill., also makes brands including Oscar Mayer, Jell-O, Planters and Maxwell House.

(Bloomberg) -- Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers said cryptocurrencies could stay a feature of global markets as something akin to “digital gold,” even if their importance in economies will remain limited.Speaking at the end of a week in which Bitcoin whipsawed, Summers told Bloomberg Television’s “Wall Street Week” with David Westin that cryptocurrencies offered an alternative to gold for those seeking an asset “separate and apart from the day-to-day workings of governments.”“Gold has been a primary asset of that kind for a long time,” said Summers, a paid contributor to Bloomberg. “Crypto has a chance of becoming an agreed form that people who are looking for safety hold wealth in. The Nasdaq 100 posted its first weekly gain in over a month, after being rattled by warnings that soaring prices would eat into future cash flows and shine a harsh light on expensive valuations. And while minutes from the Federal Reserve’s April meeting signaled an openness to discussing a scaling back of asset purchases, comments that it would “likely be some time” until the economy recovers to that point helped prevent any knee-jerk reactions.“Inflation is really only a problem for stocks if it’s going to bring the Fed off the sidelines,” said Brian Nick, chief investment strategist at Nuveen. “If you see interest rates falling, if you see inflation expectations receding, if you see the Fed continuing to come out with overall dovish minutes, it tends to be a pretty friendly environment for tech.”Whether or not the U.S. economy has seen peak growth, a series of weaker-than-expected reports have helped quell inflation fears. Last month’s housing starts were lower than anticipated, while the pace of mortgage applications slowed from the prior month. On Thursday, data from the Philadelphia Fed showed manufacturing activity in the region eased in May from a 48-year high the prior month.As a result, Citigroup Inc.’s economic surprise gauge -- which measures the magnitude to which reports either beat or miss forecasts -- briefly dropped into negative territory for the first time since June 2020 this week.The Nasdaq 100 held onto a 0.1% gain this week as inflation expectations ebbed, snapping a four-week losing streak. Tech eked out a gain as cryptocurrencies ricocheted, with Bitcoin dropping 12% on Friday alone after China reiterated its intent to to crack down on mining.Still, some warn that it’s too early to signal the all-clear on inflation risks. Bubble Risks Test China’s Commitment to No Sharp Turn in Policy

(Bloomberg) -- Despite Beijing’s best efforts, asset bubbles are forming in China.Home prices are soaring, prompting officials to revive the idea of a national property tax. A surge in raw material prices spurred pledges to increase domestic supply, toughen market oversight, and crack down on speculation and hoarding.The rapid gains are challenging the central bank’s ability to restrain inflation without hiking borrowing costs or making a sharp turn in monetary policy -- something the People’s Bank of China has said it will avoid. The risk is the government’s attempts to curb price increases won’t be enough, forcing the central bank’s hand at a vulnerable time for domestic consumption.That would be a shock to the nation’s financial markets, which are pricing in a relatively benign scenario. The 10-year government bond yield has fallen to the lowest level in eight months, while the stock benchmark CSI 300 Index is the least volatile since January. The calm contrasts with the rest of the world, where investors are becoming increasingly obsessed with how central banks may react to the threat of an overheating global economy.“How to mitigate the boom in property and commodities without tightening macro policy -- it’s a real challenge for the Chinese government,” said Zhou Hao, an economist at Commerzbank AG in Singapore.More than 15 months after the pandemic first forced China to cut rates and inject trillions of yuan into the financial system, policy makers in Beijing are -- like many others across the world -- dealing with the aftermath. As the global economic recovery accelerates, some are being forced to act because of inflation: Brazil in March became the first Group of 20 nation to lift borrowing costs, with Turkey and Russia following suit. Even Iceland hiked a short-term rate in May.Others, like the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank, have insisted spikes in prices are only temporary. The PBOC also downplayed inflation worries in its first-quarter monetary report, published shortly after data showed factory prices surged 6.8% in April -- the fastest pace since 2017.What Bloomberg Economists Say. “It will be a challenge for China to contain rising producer prices because few commodities are priced within the country. Analysts at Huachuang Securities Co. said in a May 9 report that prices of consumer goods, like home appliances and furniture, as well as electric vehicles and food, are rising. Still, there’s little evidence of demand-driven pressures, with core inflation, which strips out volatile food and energy costs, fairly subdued.The threat of inflation -- coupled with a fragile economy -- tends to be bad news for stocks because of how it erodes corporate profits, and for bonds it reduces the value of future cash flows. Accelerating prices walloped China’s bond market in 2019, and contributed to a steep selloff in stocks in early 2016.In a sign of how seriously that threat is being taken, China’s cabinet said Wednesday more effort needs to be taken to tackle rising commodity prices. A PBOC official said China should allow the yuan to appreciate to offset the impact of rising import prices, according to an article published Friday. The currency is trading near an almost three-year high against the dollar.Imported inflation is a headache for China’s leaders already dealing with risks caused by a surge in capital inflows. In recent years Beijing opened investment channels to allow more funds into its financial system. The goal was to use foreign institutions’ heft to anchor its markets and stabilize its currency, but the record liquidity unleashed by global central banks in the wake of the pandemic is now pressuring prices in China.That’s prompted some strong language from senior officials. Top securities regulator Yi Huiman said in March large flows of “hot money” into China must be strictly controlled. The same month, banking regulator Guo Shuqing said he was “very worried” that asset bubbles in overseas markets would burst soon, posing a risk to the global economy.Deciding whether recent spikes in prices are temporary or a permanent shift toward sustained inflation is something Chinese policy makers have to grapple with. Kraft Heinz: “Virtually No One Noticed” Mac & Cheese Recipe Change

After announcing 11 months ago that it would remove artificial colors and preservatives from its Macaroni & Cheese product, Kraft Heinz says it went ahead and did that… and basically no one remarked on the change.

We’ve all been living with the delusion that Kraft’s mac and cheese has remained the same, when really, Kraft Heinz says, the recipe was changed in December. The company is busy crowing about how oblivious with how we’ve been with a new ad campaign talking about its coup, calling the unnoticed switch “the world’s largest taste test.”

The new “It’s changed. But it hasn’t” campaign launches today, Kraft says, and Craig Kilborn is involved somehow:

“The new recipe’s taste, texture and appearance are so similar that virtually no one noticed,” Kraft Heinz says in a press release, noting that it’s sold 50 million boxes of the new version of mac and cheese since the switch.

The reformulated recipe uses things like paprika and turmeric to create that quintessential “mac & cheese” orange we all know, instead of artificial dyes that provided that hue before. Aparently, we didn’t know the product well enough to notice anything was amiss.

“We’d invite Americans to try our new recipe, but they most likely already have,” added Greg Guidotti, vice president of meals at Kraft Heinz. Oh, snap.

We’re unsure of what response the company is looking for with its new campaign, but we think it’s along the lines of “Thumbs up, good job, you sure did fool me, by golly!”

Kraft Macaroni And Cheese: We're Not Ashamed To Love The Boxed Stuff

Once again, we'd like to circle up the food shame wagons and have ourselves a quick fireside. A few weeks ago, we touched on the pancake shortcut we indulge in when times get tough. Today, we're going to talk to you about Kraft Macaroni & Cheese.

Let's get the compulsory stuff out of the way, right? It's artificial, processed, loaded with sodium, preservatives, dyes and who knows what else. It is, if we're being totally honest, not really even that much of a shortcut. It takes nearly as long to make as the real thing. It is definitely not mac and cheese. I know -- that was hard to hear, so I'll repeat it: it is not really even mac and cheese.

Think about what mac and cheese is, in its purest form: it's macaroni, a curved, elbow-shaped noodle, and cheese, a creamy dairy product. Kraft Macaroni & Cheese is a tubular pasta, without a lick of integrity or curvature, and reconstituted ersatz cheese powder, of a hue not found in nature. It isn't really mac and cheese, but you know what it is? Freaking delicious.

Sometimes, when we set out to make our own version of a processed food product, what we're shooting for is an imitation that is a little better for us. We love to replicate Big Macs, Chick-fil-A sandwiches, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch, with our own ingredients. We can eat these impostors guilt-free, knowing they don't contain any ingredients we can't pronounce. When we make mac and cheese, we're shooting for homestyle, creamy, cheese-stringy, crispy-on-top macaroni and cheese. There is no point in trying to replicate Kraft Macaroni & Cheese. Eating it doesn't satisfy a mac and cheese craving, but it is the only satisfaction for a Kraft Macaroni & Cheese craving.

Do you see what I'm getting at here? We can't recommend that you only eat the orange stuff from the blue box, we can't even recommend that you consider it macaroni or cheese. But, since a lot of us grew up eating it, we know that it occupies a salty, easy, make-it-yourself-while-you're-home-alone nostalgic nook in a lot of our brains. Not sure you agree with me? Take a look at this.

If that didn't activate your salivary glands, I am not even sure that you aren't a robot. Sometimes we toss in a handful of frozen peas. Sometimes, if we want to really fancy things up, we'll blanch some broccoli. Is the orange "cheese" not enough for you? Grating a little Parmesan in never hurt anyone.

Go ahead, you guys. Every once in a great while, get the stuff in the box. Ain't no shame in that game.

Kraft Singles Ditch Artificial Preservatives

Kraft's Singles cheese product slices are ditching artificial preservatives, substituing sorbic acid with natamycin as a mold-fighter.

The move comes as Americans are increasingly picky about their food's "naturalness," scrutinizing labels, dining at "organic" restaurants, and joining community supported agriculture groups.

Companies have noticed, especially now when one person's skepticism over an alien-sounding ingredient can quickly spread online.

Last week, Subway said it would remove azodicarbonamide from its breads, a widely-used FDA-approved food ingredient, after an online petition pointed out it was also used in yoga mats. PepsiCo Inc. last year said it would stop using brominated vegetable oil in Gatorade following a teen's online petition that gained over 200,000 supporters. And after a vegan barista noticed Starbucks used a red dye made from crushed bugs, the chain announced it would switch to one that was tomato-based.

Though not prompted by any uproar over its popular line of plastic-encased, yellow, processed cheese rectangles, Kraft's switch, announced Monday, is on trend.

But there's one thing you won't find on the new red circle on the Singles package touting their lack of artifical preservatives or flavors.

While organic in nature, natamycin isn't processed by the body. It passes through the intestines unabsorbed.


Kraft's New Mac & Cheese Recipe Won't Be Any Healthier for You

Kraft's boxed macaroni and cheese is the company's most iconic product, a staple of family kitchens and dorm rooms alike thanks to its simple recipe: cooked macaroni + butter + milk + one packet of bright orange cheese dust. So it was big news Monday when Kraft, caving to changing consumer tastes, announced plans to remove artificial preservatives and synthetic colors from its product, using ingredients like paprika, annatto, and turmeric instead.

Blogger Vani Hari, aka the Food Babe, declared victory after her petition—"Kraft: Stop Using Dangerous Food Dyes in Our Mac & Cheese"—got 365,000 signatures. “The thousands of letters I have received from parents whose children have benefited from the removal of artificial food dyes are ringing in my ear this morning,” Hari wrote. “We finally did it.”

Exactly what did they accomplish? After all, Kraft's new mac and cheese won't be any healthier.

To be fair, Kraft isn’t the only Big Food company moving in this direction. Nestle, Hershey, and Frito-Lay have also removed artificial dyes to appeal to nutrition-conscious consumers. It's an easy way for them to rebrand as healthy while maintaining consumer loyalty (by making sure their products remain tasty and cheap). The same goes for labels like "organic," "low fat," "no trans fats," and "made with whole grains," which leave consumers confused about what is truly good for them and what is merely deceptive labeling.

Some health-food warriors, like Hari, only contribute to the confusion. According to a New York Times profile on the blogger, Hari's “statements — often incorrect — and faulty reasoning have produced numerous memes and parodies, not to mention aggressive reactions from doctors and scientists, who call her scientifically illiterate.” An entertaining Gawker takedown, written by a chemist who runs a blog dedicated to debunking Hari, details more of Hari’s pseudoscience claims: that genetically modified foods are uniformly bad kale “literally dissolves” unhealthy cells it’s better to naturally encounter diseases rather than get flu shots and vaccines and airplanes pilots spray passengers with pesticides.

So don't celebrate Kraft's announcement just yet. Let's at least wait until the taste test.
