5 Ice Cream Shops Worth the Visit

5 Ice Cream Shops Worth the Visit

Okay, I admit it: I love ice cream. When I’m subjected to her skilled prosecution, I usually break under the cross-examination.

Still, my theory is that I am not alone and that there are millions of you out there who have the same obsession. Along with magazines like Cigar Aficionado, why isn’t there an Ice Cream Aficionado? Well, I for one am going to do my part by revealing my all-time top five list. The downside? You might have to spend a small fortune to travel to some of these places and put on a few pounds in the process, but how can you put a price on memories like these?

#5 Leopold’s Ice Cream, Savannah, Georgia
I knew there was something special about this Savannah ice cream hot spot when I first walked in. There’s a black marble soda fountain, wooden telephone booth, and a bunch of movie props lining the walls. As it turns out, one of the current owners is a big-time producer from Hollywood who, like me, happens to love ice cream.

The Leopold family has been making homemade ice cream and sauces from scratch since 1919. All of their flavors are made from top secret recipes in small batches. Legend has it that their Tutti Frutti flavor was the inspiration for the song of the same name by Johnny Mercer, a loyal customer of Leopold’s. Their chocolate-chocolate chip ice cream with hot fudge was, well, heaven. Do you suppose they will have ice cream there by the way? Who knows, but this is as close as you will get here on earth.

#4 Moomers Homemade Ice Cream, Traverse City, Michigan
Voted the Best Ice Cream Shop in America by the viewers of Good Morning America, Moomers is located just outside of town and worth the drive. Started by a first-grade teacher in 1998, this family business now serves more than 120 flavors and has lines queuing up in the summertime for their cold, creamy confections. My favorite was the Cherries Moobilee, made with black cherry ice cream, chocolate fudge, cherries, and bits of chocolate brownie — not for the calorie conscious faint of heart, I admit, but then, I am a professional!

Waffle cones are made fresh daily with a smile in all of our parlors. You can enjoy these tasty treats every day you visit our ice cream parlors. #HowWeMake #FreshMade

10 Sugar-Free Ice Creams That Are Actually Worth Eating, According To Nutritionists

The temps are getting warmer, and you know what that means: It's time to dive into a tub (or bar, or cone, or sandwich) of ice cream. It's the only right way to celebrate all the happy spring and summer vibes. But if you're on a weight loss journey or you're watching your sugar intake, you might feel like ice cream is off-limits.

Think again. Satisfying your sweet tooth without actual sugar has never been easier. I mean, have you taken a stroll down the freezer aisle at the supermarket lately? Sugar-free and no-sugar-added ice creams practically outnumber the regular stuff.

Thankfully, gone are the days of low-calorie ice creams that taste like. ice. As long as you choose the right brand, a tub of sugar-free ice cream is now a totally legit way to satisfy your mint chocolate chip craving.

Brooke Zigler, RDN, LD recommends looking for products sweetened with stevia, monk fruit, or sugar alcohols such as erythritol. &ldquoI also look for products that also contain fiber and protein, since they are more filling and help provide a steady blood glucose level,&rdquo she says.

And even though it says "sugar-free" on the carton, it doesn't mean you can skip over the rest of the nutrition label. "Just because a product is sugar-free does not necessarily make it healthier," says Zigler. "It's still important to look at all of the nutrition facts and ingredients list.&rdquo

Skip the detective work the next time you're hunting for a frozen treat and add these sugar-free or low-sugar ice creams to your cart, stat.

Minis are the perfect size ice cream treat, says Nijya Saffo, MS, RDN, LD, a registered dietitian and trainer. "They have a great creamy coconut taste and have less than 1g of added sugar and only 3g of sugar alcohol."

These mini coconut bars are also low in calories and made with ingredients such as monk fruit, chicory root extract, and pea protein that help keep their sugar content low, but their nutrients high.

Per bar: 110 cal, 9 g fat (8 g sat), 45 mg sodium, 14 g carbs, 5 g fiber, >1 g sugar, 1 g protein

Artic Zero's pistachio option only packs 5 grams of sugar, so it makes a great low-cal ice cream option, says Saffo. The non-dairy dessert is naturally sweetened with monk fruit and made with fava beans (yes, really!), which Saffo says are rich in protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

Per half-cup serving: 40 cals, 0 g fat (0 g sat), 60 mg sodium, 9 g carbs, 4 g fiber, 5 g sugar, 1 g protein

Rebel uses keto-friendly monk fruit to sweeten its goodies. &ldquoOf the many no-added-sugar ice cream options, Rebel has one of the shortest, simplest ingredient lists,&rdquo says Karen Ansel, RD, co-author of The Calendar Diet.

She likes that Rebel contains chicory root fiber, which provides fiber while also making their ice cream smooth and creamy. &ldquoThat may help you feel full longer than most frozen treats,&rdquo Ansel says.

Per half-cup serving: 170 cals, 17 g fat (8 g sat), 70 mg sodium, 10 g carbs, 2 g fiber, 0 g sugar, 2 g protein

If you&rsquore watching your sugar intake, but love a good scoop of classic vanilla, this is for you. &ldquoIt's also sweetened with Splenda (sucralose) and sorbitol, but the number-one sweetener is maltitol, a sugar alcohol that has half the calories of traditional sugar,&rdquo says dietitian Scott Keatley, RD, of Keatley Medical Nutrition Therapy. It&rsquos also pretty low in fat.

Per half-cup serving: 100 cals, 3 g fat (2 g sat), 30 mg sodium, 14 g carbs, 2 g fiber, 3 g sugar, 3 g protein

more like sorbet than ice cream, but it's a great option when you want to dig your spoon into something fruity.

&ldquoThe acai flavor uses berry juice concentrate,&rdquo explains Samantha Cassetty, RD, dietitian and contributor to Sugar Shock. It&rsquos got a nice fruity flavor to hit your sweet tooth where it counts.

Per half-cup serving: 130 cals, 2.5 g fat (0.4 g sat), 20 mg sodium, 23 g carbs, 4 g fiber, 18 g sugar, 7 g protein

George Washington Liked Ice Cream So Much He Bought Ice Cream-Making Equipment for the Capital

In the 18th century, ice cream, or, at the time, “Ice creem,” was a delicacy favored by the elite. The French had brought this treat to America, and one early American aficionado, says John L. Smith Jr. writing for the Journal of the American Revolution, was George Washington.

In those early days, ice cream was a rich man's treat, says Smith:

Ice cream was initially something that only a wealthy person would be able to have.  It would require the money to own at least one cow and not have to sell her milk and cream it would require fairly large quantities of sugar (an imported commodity), as well as salt (also imported).  Making ice cream also requires ice, which had to be cut on a river during the winter and placed in an ice house in the hope that it would still be around by the summer (most homes wouldn’t have had an ice house).  Finally, making ice cream could take a fair amount of work and most families couldn’t afford the time for a family member or a servant to ‘waste’ making such a frivolous dish.

In the time before the war, when Washington was running his home at Mount Vernon, he may have been exposed to ice cream by Virginia's colonial governor, says Smith. And Washington loved the stuff. So much so, in fact, that when he assumed the presidency, he made sure to bring ice cream with him.

Records show that as president, Washington bought an ice cream serving spoon and two “dble tin Ice Cream moulds.” This was followed by 𔄚 Iceries Compleat,” twelve “ice plates,” and thirty-six “ice pots.” (An “ice pot” was a small cup used for holding the ice cream since it was more liquid in colonial times, similar to the runniness of an ice cream cone on a hot day.) Thompson speculates, “the large number of ice cream pots suggests that this was a favorite dessert at Mount Vernon, as well as in the capital.

When guests would come to visit the President, they'd sometimes be served ice cream. Smith includes in the Journal of the American Revolution a recipe for colonial-era ice cream, which would have been a fair bit different from the ice creams of today.

5 Ice Cream Shops Worth the Visit - Recipes

Oh the wonder of ice cream! And salted caramel sauce…and cookies…and brownies…and pies. Bi-Rite Creamery was started by two bakers who wanted to bring San Francisco perfectly balanced, delectably delicious treats in a responsible, sustainable way. Their goal was to make you happy.

So then and now, they develop intensely flavored ice cream recipes that feature locally-sourced ingredients, often highlighting the season’s tastiest fruits like Masumoto Peaches, and handmade inclusions such as the snickerdoodles for Ricanelas and the chocolate cookies in the Cookies and Cream.

After closing for many weeks during the San Francisco ‘shelter in place’ the Creamery is now open for takeout. On the menu are scoops of your favorite ice cream flavors like popular summertime Balsamic Strawberry and Peach Cobbler, handcrafted sundaes, and pre-packaged novelties.

Ordering ahead is still available for pre-packaged cups of ice cream, the pre-packaged ice cream bars, sandwiches, popsicles, and ice cream cakes.

A bed of peanut butter, tons of hot fudge, peanut butter cups and vanilla ice cream. Our absolute happy place.

Too much of a good thing is never enough. Cookies and cream ice cream, mini Oreos, chocolate chips, and a dusting of Oreo cookie crumbs on top make this one amazing creation.

Broken pieces of meringue cookies (store-bought, because you deserve a break every now and then), sliced strawberries, and strawberry ice cream turn a low-brow sundae into something worthy of English high tea.

The most colorful way to drink Champagne!

There's so much s'more to love in this insane dessert. On top of a base of marshmallow topping sits vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, and graham cracker pieces. Then it's finished with a malted milk ball JUST BECAUSE.

We might have overdone it on this one. Heath Bar ice cream gets covered in chocolate sauce and an entire concession stand's worth of toppings: M&Ms, Milk Duds, Whoppers. and even Jujyfruits and a few Sour Patch Kids, for good measure.

Best for Lefties: Good Cook Smart Scoop Ice Cream Scoop

Suitable for left- and right-hand users

Just when you think you’ve seen every possible style of ice cream scoop, you look again and see something a little bit different. When it comes to scooping, this is much like all the other ice cream scoops you’ve used, except that you need to gently squeeze the handle while you scoop. When it’s time to serve, you simply release the handle and the bowl splits apart to serve the ice cream neatly. This is made from heavy duty cast aluminum and has a nonstick finish to help the ice cream slide out and make cleaning easier. Because this doesn’t have a side trigger or sweeping mechanism inside the bowl, and all sides are tapered for easy entry into the ice cream, this can be used either right- or left-handed. This should only be washed by hand.

The Midnight Scoop Stainless Steel Ice Cream Scoop (view at Amazon) takes the top spot because of its elegant yet ergonomic design and its sturdy, nearly indestructible construction. If you prefer a trigger-style scoop, go for the OXO Good Grips Trigger Ice Cream Scoop (view at Amazon). It has a non-slip handle and also works well with batter.
