How to Make a Dirty Martini

When the craving for salt and olive brine hits, dirtier is better.

  1. Combine the gin, vermouth, and olive juice in a mixing tin with ice. Stir well.
  2. Strain into a chilled martini glass.
  3. Garnish with as many olives as you'd like on a toothpick.

If you want more olive juice, add more olive juice. There's no reason to set limitations on yourself.

The Dirty Martini used to be the punching bag of cocktails. You can see why. A classic Martini is an orchestral composition, demanding finely tuned finesse from its maker. A Dirty Martini is "Smoke on the Water" in Guitar Hero by comparison. You might've gotten an eyeroll at the bar for ordering it. There might've been whisperings about "wasting good vermouth." And sure, it's not like the Dirty Martini has suddenly become the golden child of drinks. But there is a certain amount of new respect for a person who knows what they're about, and if what they're about is a Dirty Martini, so be it.

A Dirty Martini doesn't just take guts to order, but to drink, as well. Boldly briny and salty as the sea, it's disgustingly good, with that cloudy swirl of olive juice attacking your taste buds. But when you want a Dirty Martini, you want a Dirty Martini. It's like craving a can of salt and vinegar Pringles. Nothing will do until you've got them. If that craving has just walloped you, here's how to make a Dirty Martini. You can use vodka instead of gin if you prefer. Just don't skimp on the olives.

A Little Background

The Dirty Martini enjoys a rich history of being utterly despised by bartenders. But among its champions was FDR, who famously&mdashand sloppily&mdashmade his own cocktails almost every day, and who is credited for popularizing this briny Martini offshoot. (Our 32nd president also had the honor of ending Prohibition in 1933.) Punch pegs the rise of the Dirty Martini to post-WWII America, although it was invented before, and says FDR's version called for two parts gin, one part vermouth, and a teaspoon of olive brine. According to some reports, FDR served a dry Martini to Joseph Stalin at the Tehran Conference in 1943, which Stalin unenthusiastically reviewed as "cold on the stomach." Perhaps he'd have preferred it dirty.

These days, bartenders are coming around to the Dirty Martini if drinkers insist upon ordering it, it might as well be good. As such, craft variations and ingredients have sprung up in recent years, like olive bitters, caperberries for garnish, and brine specially bottled for use in cocktails. The Dirty Martini is cleaning up its act, so to speak.

If You Like This, Try These

Too dirty for you? A classic gin Martini punches up the gin and holds the juice. You can garnish it with three olives, or a lemon twist for a hint of citrus, or cocktail onions (that's called a Gibson). And then you get into the Martini variations. There's a Vesper, like James Bond drank, with a perplexing recipe that calls for gin, vodka, and Lillet. (Don't shake!) A Tuxedo has gin, sherry, and orange bitters. And there's always the option of swapping your gin for vodka.

However, if you're just here for the salt and the brine, then it is high time you learned the art of the pickleback shot and the pickle juice cocktail.

Automatic reward during Side Job “Chippin’ In“. This is part of Rogue’s Side Questline. “Chippin’ In” gets added to your journal (quest log) automatically over the course of the story, some time after doing Rogue’s main jobs. If you play through the story first to get Johnny’s Tank Top you will automatically have this Side Job unlocked by that point. Johnny will put on the Aviators (sunglasses) during a scripted car ride with a girl named Ruby.

Cyberpunk 2077. Credit: CD Projekt Red

You have to complete a special quest called Stadium Love in the 6th Street area in Santo Domingo to unlock this smart weapon in Cyberpunk 2077. Arriving in the area, you should see a number of broken buildings as part of an estate flooded with American flag-toting gun nuts.

Once you meet them, if you make careful dialogue choices you’ll be tasked with shooting multiple sets of targets with great accuracy, drinking a shot of alcohol between each round. You need to get a very high score to unlock it, but when you do it’s very worth it. This is one of few smart rifles we’ve found in the game, and it just seems to deal massive critical damage to all enemies – helped along by the chemical damage tick baked into the gun’s software.

  • 6 thick-cut bacon slices, chopped
  • 4 celery stalks, sliced (about 1 1/2 cups)
  • 1 medium-size yellow onion, chopped (about 1 1/2 cups)
  • 1 small green bell pepper, finely chopped (about 1 cup)
  • 3 garlic cloves, chopped (about 1 Tbsp.)
  • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, divided
  • 8 cups lower-sodium chicken broth
  • 4 cups fresh or frozen black-eyed peas
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 1/2 cups uncooked Carolina Gold rice
  • Fresh scallions, sliced

Cook bacon in a Dutch oven over medium-high, stirring occasionally, until starting to crisp, about 10 minutes. Add celery, onion, bell pepper, garlic, thyme, black pepper, cayenne, and 1 teaspoon of the salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onion is tender, about 8 minutes. Add broth and black-eyed peas and bring to a boil over medium-high. Reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer until peas are tender, about 40 minutes. Drain pea mixture, reserving cooking liquid. Return pea mixture and 1 cup of the cooking liquid to Dutch oven. Cover to keep warm set aside.

Heat oil in a medium saucepan over medium-high. Add rice and cook, stirring often, until fragrant and lightly toasted, 3 to 4 minutes. Stir in 3 cups of the reserved cooking liquid and remaining 1⁄2 teaspoon salt. Bring to a boil, and reduce heat to medium-low cover and cook until rice is tender, 15 to 18 minutes. Fluff rice with a fork, and gently stir into pea mixture in Dutch oven. Stir in remaining cooking liquid, 1⁄4 cup at a time, until desired consistency is reached. Sprinkle servings with sliced fresh scallions.

Rapid Infusions

There’s no better way to increase the flavor profiles of simple dips, oils and alcohols than to infuse them with your favorite herbs or spices. Usually infusing oil or alcohol takes hours, days, or even weeks but with the iSi Whip, you can do it in a matter of minutes and without heating. Just place the ingredient to be infused in the iSi Whip together with the flavorful ingredient, charge it with N2O, wait for a minute and suddenly expel all the gas. That’s it, rapid infusion with the iSi Whip. You can read more about infusing liquids with the iSi Whip in this article.

Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

A fter his dugout suffers a direct hit from a German shell in the last days of the Great War, 20-year-old American infantryman Joe Bonham gradually comes to in a French hospital. As his thoughts become more lucid, he realises he has been left deaf, dumb and blind and that all four of his limbs have subsequently been amputated. His face, meanwhile, has been obliterated by the shell and what is left - "a red gash . with mucus hanging from it" - is now covered by a mask to avoid distressing the nurses.

Despite his injuries, his mind still functions as well as ever, letting him think back to his childhood in small-town Colorado and allowing him to contemplate the full horror of his situation. Joe soon realises he is "the nearest thing to a dead man on Earth . a dead man with a mind that could think".

First published on 3 September 1939, two days after Germany invaded Poland, Johnny Got His Gun is a stark, first-person account of Joe's growing awareness and his desperate attempts to communicate with the outside world.

Screenwriter Dalton Trumbo would later find notoriety as one of the Hollywood 10 and was blacklisted and jailed for his membership of the Communist party. Certainly, he does little to mask his political views in this astonishing and profoundly disturbing pacifist novel, as Joe dreams of warning all the "little guys" sent out to kill other countries' "little guys" of the futility of war that some fates can be worse than dying.

Seventy years on, as the casualties continue to mount in Afghanistan, with the numberless wounded rarely warranting more than a mention in dispatches, this new edition of Trumbo's masterpiece is depressingly timely.

Cyberpunk 2077: Silencer for weapons - how to use? Cyberpunk 2077 guide, walkthrough

On this page of the Cyberpunk 2077 guide, we answer how to get a gun silencer, as well as what requirements must be met to install one. This is crucial if you want to play in a stealthy way.

In Cyberpunk 2077, you can use muzzles equipped with a silencer. These muzzles are offered by traders (just visit an arms dealer) and in the game world (most conveniently found as loot at dead opponents).

The silencers can only be installed on weapons with an empty slot for muzzle mod (an example shown the picture). Not all guns will have this mod slot open. It depends on a particular weapon, but it also has advantages, as you can also find rifles with silencer slots. This allows for silent, high-rate fire.

Each muzzle with a silencer is described by at least two parameters. You can find different muzzles around the world - the rarer the muzzle, the more features it has and the more it changes the stats.

This section of the guide will show you the best weapons to find and use as you explore Night City.

Lizzie - Tech Pistol

Shortly after Act 2 begins you'll have access to the Automatic Love mission. After speaking to Judy in Lizzie's Bar, you can grab the Lizzie pistol off the table outside her room. This gun is great as it fires an extra shot every time you pull the trigger, and increases the number of rounds fired when charged up.

Fenrir - Power Submachine Gun

Fenrir is an absolute powerhouse that can be nabbed early on by visiting a monk near the northern docks area of Watson. After helping him save his brother, you'll be able to grab this iconic weapon from the Maelstrom gang. Fenrir is great at absolutely melting enemies - literally. It deals thermal damage plus has the opportunity to inflict burn damage on top of it. This is a gun you'll want to upgrade and keep with you throughout the game, as it is useful in almost any situation.

Skippy - Smart Pistol

Not only is Skippy an incredibly powerful and unique smart pistol that scales with the user's level, it also talks and has a full personality. This weapon can be found in the Heywood area as part of an optional side mission where you must collect it off of someone's dead body in an alleyway. Skippy has a lethal or non-lethal mode (though these are not what they first seem!) that you can select when you first pick it up after having a short conversation with the rather sassy gun.

Follow our full guide below for where to find Skippy:

Widow Maker - Tech Precision Rifle

Widow Maker is an optional Iconic weapon that can deal some serious damage. It fires two projectiles per shot and has the chance to deal poison damage when shots are charged up. While working with Panam during the Ghost Town mission, she will talk about getting revenge on Nash. This gun can be missed, so be sure to select the option "OK. So where's this hideout?" during your chat with Panam for the opportunity to take down Nash and his gang. Afterwards, you can loot Widow Maker off Nash's body, adding this powerful weapon to your arsenal.

Overwatch - Power Sniper Rifle

Panam's trusty sniper rifle can be yours after completing the Riders on the Storm Side Job. Once you've completed its requirements, the sniper rifle will be propped next to the motorcycle just before Panam rides away. This power sniper rifle deals high damage, has a faster-than-average reload speed and is very accurate. Its full potential is unlocked at Body level 6 - which will increase its overall power.

Prototype: Shingen Mark V - Smart Submachine Gun

This iconic Smart Submachine Gun can be found during the Gimme Danger mission in Act 2. It is hidden inside an open Arasaka truck inside the compound, guarded by a remote mine that you must quickly deactivate. Like other smart weapons, this gun automatically targets and fires at enemies inside the smart targeting square, launching a series of projectiles at up to three enemies simultaneously. This is a great gun to break out when you're outnumbered. It also has a high critical damage modifier and the ability to burn enemies, as well.

  1. ↑ A tick is a time unit countable by the software. Most of Terraria's updating logic happens every tick. A tick has the length of 1/60th of a second, hence there are 60 ticks in a second and 3600 ticks in a minute.
