Vanilla Scones Recipe with Orange Glaze

This vanilla scones recipe with orange glaze is the perfect baked good to enjoy with your morning coffee or for an afternoon treat. These vanilla scones are delicious on their own, but with the orange glaze, it takes them to the next level.

I’m so excited about this recipe. After I made these vanilla scones, I honestly had to put them away in a container and give some away so I didn’t eat every last one of them! My son loved them so much and kept wanting another “cooone” I had to hide the container.

You guys know how much I love Starbucks. They have great drinks, obviously, but I also love some of their baked goods. I love trying to re-create recipes that I love at home. I’ve re-created their delicious Pumpkin Loaf and Lemon Loaf and I created this salted honey latte before they even created their oat milk version – it’s so good whatever milk you use!

I’ve been cooking and baking A TON during this weird time, so this is just another in the long list of things I’ve made that I had to share.

This recipe is a mixture of two of my favorite baked treats – the petite vanilla scones that are oh so yummy from Starbucks and the orange scones from Panera.

I love the size of the petite vanilla scones, but find they are too hard. I love the orange glazed ones from Panera, but find they are too big and too crumbly and doughy.

So I wanted the scones I created to be smaller in size, and taste like a ‘scone’ while being firm but not tooth-breaking hard.

What I love most about these scones is the balance between the soft, buttery vanilla flavor in the scone with the contrast of the zesty, orange flavor in the glaze. If orange isn’t your thing, you can always substitute for lemon.

As with most of my recipes, I am always trying to see if I am able to make things into a freezer meal so it can be prepped ahead of time. Great news! You can make these vanilla scones with orange glaze into a make-ahead, freezer breakfast.

Simply make the dough ahead of time, form into scone and freeze the dough. Then, when your’e ready to eat them, just remove the dough from the freezer and allow it to sit on a baking sheet while the oven preheats, then bake.

Honey Glazed Walnuts

Honey Glazed Walnuts are the perfect sweet and crunchy addition to any salad.

With New Year’s resolutions starting this week I’m sure a lot of salads are on the menu. Nuts are one of my favorite toppings to add to salad. If I’m lazy I just add roasted peanuts but I prefer toasted or glazed so I’ll often put forth the 10 minutes to prepare a cup of nuts for the week to add to my salads. It’ definitely worth it!

It only takes 4 ingredients and a skillet to whip up these addicting sweet and crunchy Honey Glazed Walnuts. These are especially perfect for those who are trying to limit their refined sugar intake.

Try these in this Roasted Butternut Squash Salad and this Blackened Salmon Salad… or just snack on them (because you won’t be able to help yourself).

Peanut Butter Scones


  • 2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 2 tablespoons white granulated sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup milk (I used unsweetened vanilla almond milk)
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Raw sugar


Preheat oven to 425-degrees. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and spray with baking spray. Set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, mix together the flour, brown sugar, white sugar, salt, baking powder, baking soda and nutmeg. Use a pastry blender, or two forks, to cut in the butter to the dry ingredients. Cut in the peanut butter to the dough. Continue to cut the peanut butter and butter into the dry ingredients, until there are no large chunks of butter left. Stir in the beaten egg, milk and vanilla extract into the flour-butter mixture, until a soft dough forms.

Divide the dough into two balls. Place each dough ball on the parchment lined baking sheet and pat each ball into a circle, until it is 3/4-inch in thickness. Cut each circle into eight wedges each, for a total of sixteen scones. Top scones with a sprinkling of raw sugar.

Bake in 425-degree oven for 15-20 minutes, or until tops of scones are firm to touch and scones are baked through. Remove scones from the oven and transfer to a wire rack to cool.


Store scones in an airtight container, at room temperature, for 2-3 days.

Zesting an orange

This recipe uses orange zest in the dough AND the glaze. It adds the perfect boost of fresh orange flavor and gives it a citrusy tang that tastes so delicious. Zesting an orange can sometimes seem intimidating, but it really is super easy! I definitely recommend using a zester because it makes the process super quick and easy. Below is some helpful information to get you started!

  • How to zest an orange with a zester? If you have zester or are thinking about buying one, check out this helpful tutorial. It applies to zesting all citrus fruits, like lemons and limes as well.
  • How do you zest an orange without a zester? No zester? No problem! Use a kitchen knife or vegetable peeler instead!
  • How much is the zest of one orange? When zesting a whole orange, you should end up with somewhere between 2 to 3 Tablespoons of zest. You’ll need the zest of one whole orange for this recipe, but remember to set aside 1 teaspoon of zest for the glaze!

A Breakfast Treat

I have to admit, I am kind of obsessed with scones. When the weather starts to get colder, all I want is to curl up with a good book, a warm cup of cocoa, and a delicious scone. There&rsquos a coffee shop just down the street from my house, and it is all too tempting to just pop down there and pick up a scone when the craving hits. Unfortunately, my scone habit is not doing any favors for my budget, so it&rsquos high time to come up with some tasty scone recipes to make at home.

This cinnamon roll scone recipe came about because I had a craving for baked goods, and couldn&rsquot decide between making scones and making cinnamon rolls. These scones are truly the best of both worlds! They are so buttery, flaky, and sweet, swirled with a delicious cinnamon and brown sugar filling, and topped with a sweet glaze. They&rsquore also simple and easy to make. What more could you want?

My favorite part is definitely that brown sugar and cinnamon swirl! It gives these scones such a delicious flavor, and makes them extra craveable. I usually send my extra baked goods to work with my husband, to share with his co-workers, but these scones I kept all for myself!


The very first scone I ever ate was a glazed orange scone from Panera. I&rsquove been smitten with scones ever since then.

In my opinion, they&rsquore the perfect balance between biscuits and cake &ndash I mean is it possible to go wrong with that textural combination? I think not.

But it was high time I came back to the scone flavor that started it all for me: Orange Scones.

These scones have just the right amount of sweetness from the glaze, orange flavor from orange zest in the scones and orange juice in the glaze, and tang from a secret ingredient.

Honey Date Scones

On a recent trip with the California Farm Water Coalition Board, we toured the Coachella Valley and learned how Dates are grown and harvested.

It’s quite fascinating, really. The crops are harvested just once a year and someone has to climb to the tops of each tree six to eight times during that process to ensure a fruitful (no pun intended) harvest! All of the dates grown in the USA, come from this region. It certainly makes me appreciate these sweet little gems! So when I ran across a recipe for Honey Scones that were filled with old-fashioned oats, I thought, why not add some dates to the mix and see what happens? Sometimes I just get crazy that way. P.S. If adding fruit to a plain scone recipe is crazy, obviously I don’t set the bar too high on my definition of crazy. -)

Ironically, there is a type of date called a “Honey Date” and that’s what I used here, but it’s not where the name of the recipe came from. This recipe uses honey as part of the sweetener. It’s just a happy coincidence!

The recipe makes 8 scones and goes together in less than 30 minutes, so it’s perfect for a weekday morning or even a busy weekend when you want something quick before you dash out the door to explore your world! I like that these scones are moist on the inside, unlike typical scones which tend to be a little dry.

Once they were baked, I brushed the scones with a bit of orange juice and let it soak in to the top. Oranges and dates are a beautiful flavor combination and while it’s very subtle, it’s one of those little steps that adds a lot to the finished product! Plus, your kitchen will smell just lovely!

The orange juice and fresh date glaze on the top might have enhanced the moist factor just a bit…

Then, in true “Imperfect Kitchen” form, while glazing the scones and feeling all fancy because I’d put the glaze in a squeeze bottle to make it look pretty,

BAM! The top came off the squeeze bottle and the rest of the glaze dumped over this scone. What a mess! Thankfully, it was the last scone and the rest of them did look nice. Of course, I had to eat that one. Part of being a blogger is having to sacrifice and eat your mistakes. Mmmm.. it was a delicious sacrifice too.
