Man Dies During Krispy Kreme Race That Challenges Runners to Eat 12 Doughnuts

Runner dies trying to complete Krispy Kreme Challenge, where competitors stuff their faces with doughnuts and run for charity

Death by doughnut marathon is a heartbreaking way to go.

The Krispy Kreme Challenge is an annual charity event held in North Carolina that challenges runners to feast on doughnuts and complete a five-mile run to raise money for a local children’s hospital. But this year, the challenge ended in tragedy after a 58-year-old participant died of a heart attack during the gluttonous race that’s described as “2400 calories, 12 doughnuts, 5 miles, 1 hour,” according to the Washington Post.

Shortly after the race kicked off, an unnamed man began having chest pains and was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. He never actually made it to the Krispy Kreme where runners congregate after the race.

“Unfortunately we have some sad news to share,” the group that organizes the unique race said. “We regretfully confirm that a participant of today’s Krispy Kreme Challenge has died. We are deeply saddened and wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones.”

The Krispy Kreme Challenge began as a competition amongst students at the North Carolina State University to raise money for the local hospital, but has since grown into an annual headliner event that draws more than 65,000 runners each year. This is the challenge’s first fatality.
