a good start to the morning, but I am a bit of a choco-holic and so added 2 more tsp of instant hot chocolate- I used options low calories hot chocolate powder-19 Apr 2009

A mood booster for lazy morning! Since coffee isn't friendly with my stomach, I don't use it and add 1 tbsp of instant hot chocolate instead. I change the milk to soya milk which is more suitable for vegan.-03 Jan 2016


Blackberry Banana Breakfast Smoothie: A Sneaky Morning Treat!

One thing I love about the northwest is the abundance of fruit in the summertime, especially the blackberries … oh the blackberries. They cost something like $20 a pound to buy in stores, but grow freely on every street here, with only the price of a few thorn sticks from the blackberry pushes to pay.

The only problem is that blackberry season is short. Once the berries finally emerge, they ripen within days and disappear almost as quickly. Determined to cash in on the late summer harvest, we stalked blackberry bushes throughout August, seeking the perfect sunny spot where we could load up several containers for freezing.

Late last week while on a walk, we noticed the gentle scent of fresh berries, and smiled at one another. “Just a few more days and they’ll be ready to pick!” my husband proclaimed …

Finally, sure we were in for some beautiful plump berries, we headed out the door with bags in hand. But to our surprise, they were gone! Not the berries, the bushes! Just as the berries were beginning to ripen, the entire lot of blackberry bushes on our street had been cut back to bare bones a cruel joke indeed.

Fortunately, from what was left, we were able to snag just enough of these plump gems to make a blackberry banana breakfast smoothie or two …


How To Make The Best Banana Smoothie

My basic smoothie recipe calls for four simple ingredients:

Banana — I use one banana to make one large or two smaller (kid-size) smoothies. For the best tasting smoothie, use a ripe banana. For the creamiest banana smoothie, use frozen banana slices (I’ve shared how I freeze bananas for smoothies below).

Half an orange — When I have oranges in the house, I love adding them to my morning smoothie. It adds extra vitamin C and tropical flavor. If you don’t have oranges on hand, don’t worry, you can substitute other fruits like mango, pineapple, and berries.

Plain or Greek yogurt — To be honest, I don’t always add yogurt to my smoothies, but when I do have it in the fridge, adding a spoonful ensures a protein-packed and creamy smoothie. For a smoothie without yogurt, add a little extra fruit or include veggies (like spinach or kale) instead.

Water or milk — To help the ingredients blend, I like adding a splash of liquid to the blender. For a smoothie without milk, use water. It still tastes amazing. For more creaminess use milk (dairy or non-dairy both work).

To make the smoothie, I add everything into a blender, and then blend until smooth. For an icy cold smoothie, throw in a handful of ice or use frozen fruits.

How To Freeze Fruit For Smoothies

To make smoothies even easier, freeze fresh fruit into portions. You can even prepare smoothie packs and freeze them for a grab and blend smoothie option.

To freeze fruit for smoothies, rinse and chop fresh fruit into small pieces. Pat them dry then arrange, in one layer, on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Slide the baking sheet into the freezer and freeze until hard (two to three hours).

When the fruit is hard, divide it between freezer-safe bags and keep in the freezer for your next smoothie.

Banana Smoothie Variations

As I mentioned above, this smoothie recipe is delicious as written, but it can also be used as a base for other smoothie recipes. We shared a few suggestions in the video, but I’ll add even more below:

  • Add more fruit (fresh or frozen). I love mango, pineapple, and berries.
  • Add greens like spinach, kale, or Swiss chard. I add one to two cups.
  • Add healthy fat with some avocado.
  • Add more protein and fiber with hemp seeds, chia seeds, or your favorite protein powder.
  • Add nuttiness and extra sticking power with a tablespoon of peanut butter, almond butter, or other nut butter.
  • Add some chocolate with a tablespoon of cocoa powder or my favorite, cacao nibs.
  • Add fresh ginger or turmeric or add dried spices like ground cinnamon or ground turmeric.

Healthy Banana Nut Breakfast Smoothie

Has your June been crazy like mine? Between planning for Ethan’s birthday party, traveling to graduations, non-stop cookbook cooking, building a studio kitchen (again), kid activities …..woooooosaaaaaah!

I wish I was one of those people that can totally flourish with a lot going on. You know, the movers and shakers that have no problem with hopping from coast to coast in a day while juggling phone calls, meetings, etc.

That is not me. At all. I’m a Taurus. I like balance. Peacefulness. Calm. One thing at a time kinda girl.

Life is rarely like that though so I’ve learned many tips and tricks to maintain my sanity. Sometimes it’s as easy as making a quick smoothie for breakfast and prepping dinners for the week on Sunday.

I always meal prep when I know my week is going to be insane. It frees up so much mental space and time when meals are ready to go.

Lately, I’ve been all about smoothies for breakfast.

Like seriously, are smoothies not the BEST hot weather breakfast ever invented? I don’t have to turn on the oven, they come together in minutes, the kids love them, they’re filling, they cool you down, and you can enjoy them on the go. Major summer breakfast win!


Today I’ve teamed up with Fisher Nuts again to bring you one of my favorite, Banana Nut Breakfast Smoothies!

This Banana Nut Breakfast Smoothie is the perfect way to use up ripe bananas. I’ve made it several times this month!

Feel free to sweeten it with honey, sugar or dates but honestly, I don’t think it needs it if the bananas are ripe.

The secret to this creamy smoothie is the homemade almond butter. Turning the almonds into a butter/paste keeps the smoothie from having that powdery aftertaste and really bumps up that nutty flavor!

I love using Fisher Nuts for my almond butter. Fisher Nuts are fresh out of their shells with no preservatives and are non-GMO project verified.

Simply scoop 1/4 cup of Fisher Nuts Whole Natural Almonds out of the handy, resealable stand-up bag and place them into the blender first. After pulsating them for a few seconds you’ll have almond flour. Continue pulsating and the flour quickly turns into a thick almond butter, perfect for smoothies.

Then just add the rest of the ingredients into the blender and done! Now you see why this has been my go-to, quick and easy breakfast this month!

This banana nut smoothie is so delicious and you don’t even have to turn on the oven to enjoy that homemade banana nut muffin flavor!


Strawberry Banana Smoothie Ingredients

So you ask, how to make a strawberry banana smoothie? It’s as simple as blending all the ingredients until smooth, then adding a little more milk as needed to reach a texture to your liking. It’s that easy! You’ll need:

  • Strawberries: Fresh of frozen work here. You can also substitute blueberries or blackberries!
  • Banana: Again, use fresh or frozen. I like to pre-chop and freeze soon-to-go-bad bananas and store them in my freezer for smoothies. It ensures I never throw away rotten bananas and makes smoothies instantly frostier!
  • Milk: You can use cow’s or dairy-free milk (like almond milk). Alternatively, you can make these Strawberry Banana Smoothies without milk and use apple or orange juice instead.

For the best possible smoothie, make sure at least one of your fruits is frozen!


Banana smoothie with oats

Smoothies are one of my favourite ways to start the day for an easy, healthy breakfast that doesn’t feel too heavy. This Banana Bread Smoothie is perfect when you’re looking for a breakfast smoothie that is fresh, creamy and filling.

This smoothie is made with One Degree Organics Sprouted Steel Cut Oats which are made with clean organic ingredients. Sprouting the oats helps to release more nutrients, and makes them easier to digest.

Steel cut oats are also packed with fibre which leaves you feeling full, making them the perfect addition to a breakfast smoothie that will give you long lasting energy!


Easy persimmon banana breakfast smoothie preparation:

Today I felt like having quick and nutritious breakfast and so I opted for this banana breakfast smoothie!

And guess what? The prep takes literally a few seconds. The “hardest” part here is to peel the bananas and persimmon. Yes! It is that easy! Throw everything in a blender (or a smoothie maker) and in less than a minute you can sip this healthy sugar free smoothie!

I am using coconut milk drink but you can use ordinary milk as well. Make sure the bananas are ripe for the extra sweetness and stronger flavor. Now I added 2 tablespoons of honey because I like my drinks sweeter but you can omit it if you like. If the bananas and persimmon are sweet enough then you might feel like no other sweetener is needed here. My banana and persimmons were quite sweet but I was also after an extra energy boost that the honey provides.


How long can you keep a Banana Smoothie in the fridge?

Generally, a smoothie will keep about 8-12 hours in the fridge. A quick smell will clue you into knowing if the smoothie is okay or not. If you do plan on storing a smoothie, store it in a container with an airtight lid. You’ll want to fill that container to the very top to prevent trapping air in the container. (Air exposure degrades the nutrients in the smoothie.)

For this Banana Smoothie recipe, I recommend eating it all in one sitting, preferably right after making it. I don’t find this smoothie sits or stores well. As the frozen banana melts, it changes the texture of this delicious drink.

Ingredients

frozen peaches, mango, or pineapple

granola, plus more if desired

Additional toppings: fresh fruit, nuts, coconut flakes, cacao nibs, or chocolate chips

Instructions

In a blender, combine the almond milk, coconut milk, frozen blueberries, frozen peaches, banana, spinach, chia seeds, flax seeds and a dash of vanilla extract if desired. Purée until smooth, about 1 minute. The smoothie should be thick, so if needed, add more frozen fruit until desired consistency is reached. Pour into a bowl and top with granola and fresh fruit. Eat immediately.

Other blender add-in ideas: walnuts, almonds, cashews, cacao powder, dates, protein powder, yogurt

The almond milk can be substituted with dairy milk, soy milk, or coconut water.

If you only have fresh fruit on hand, toss in a few ice cubes.

Peanut butter Banana Breakfast smoothie

I found a recipe similar to this in a healthy cookbook. If you lower the peanut butter content to just 1 tbsp, and add 1/4 tsp nutmeg, it's tastier and has less calories. :D Good suggestion! - 7/2/08

Great fast breakfast. for all you folks that always have a few bananas go to waste. just remember to peel them cut into chunks(size of ice cubes) and freeze. never waste another banana and be ready to blend up a smoothie on a moments notice. - 1/19/10

I had a sliced banana in the freezer, so I used a 1/2 cup of frozen banana. I also halved the peanut butter & added "Cinnamon Plus."
