They Watched Julie & Julia 365 Times

Northwestern student Lawrence Dai decided to watch Julia & Julia (yes, the amazing Meryl Streep terrible Amy Adams one) for an entire year, and blog about it on The Lawrence/Julie & Julia Project. He finished on Nov. 29 of this year. During the 365 viewings, Dai counted the number of chews on the film, chopped up 30 pounds of onions, synced the movie to Kanye West, and got a couple marriage proposals out of it. His flippant, profanity-filled, and occasionally raunchy blog rages against Amy Adams’s character and chronicles how he managed to watch the two-hour film every single day. Props for completing the task, Dai. Word is, he’s moving onto other blogging projects.

They Ate Rotten Cheese with Maggots… in New York!

The Sardinian delicacy called casu marzu is essentially rotten cheese teeming with maggots (see the squeamy video here). Lucky (?) New York blogger Bradley Hawks of Amuse*Bouche got to give the rare cheese a taste at a Queens Italian restaurant. The review? “The initial taste was pecorino, followed by gorgonzola, and then a spicy aftertaste, like freshly cracked black pepper. Had it not been literally moving, I might have enjoyed a lot more...” Word.

They Got Us Close to the Chefs, Because Sometimes They are the Chefs

One of our favorite bloggers, Helen Cho of IntoNoRes+, started giving us behind-the-scenes peeks into the No Reservations shoots this year and we were hooked. Who else will give us shots of Bourdain chillin’ with the crew and cooking turkey for Thanksgiving (plus bonus scenes)? She even got prolific blogger/chef Eddie Huang of Baohaus to write about meeting Tony.

Speaking of which, Huang’s blog Fresh off the Boat may have downsized the posting content this year, but he still made headlines by speaking up about Sam Sifton, racism, the best eats, and everything in between. So keep it up, Huang. We’re still reading.

10 Awesome Geeky Cooking Hacks

While “sous vide” has been one of the biggest buzzwords in the cooking world for the last few years, those of you who don’t work in kitchens or read cooking websites would be excused for not knowing the term. Sous vide literally means “under vacuum” in French and that’s essentially how this food is prepared –vacuum sealed food is placed in a low heat water bath and cooked very slowly. The cooking method generally allows for foods to cook more evenly, retaining a better texture and its original appearance.

Unfortunately, a quick search on Amazon will show you that a sous vide cooker will run you a minimum of $200. Then you’ll need to buy a vacuum sealer, which will add on at least $30, and non-reusable plastic bags for the sealer that can quickly add up too. All of this is a pretty big investment –especially if you just want to check out the process before you commit.

To hack yourself a cheaper option, Serious Eats suggests using a beer cooler, a thermometer and a few Ziplock bags, which will cost less than $25 total. Just add hot water to your cooler until the temperature is a few degrees above your target cooking temperature, then add in your bagged food, close the lid and let the insulation do the work for you. As for how well the beer cooler holds up to the real deal: in tests, the beer cooler worked every bit as well as a quality $450 cooker.

Turn A Crock Pot Into A Yogurt Maker

Most electric yogurt makers only incubate the product, leaving out the critical heating and sterilization process. That’s why Chris Reilly of Make Magazine opted to hack his own yogurt maker out of a Crock Pot that automates the entire process. He call it the “Yobot.”

While the process is pretty involved, for those with the tech skills to pull it off, it seems like a great way to go through the yogurt making process. As a bonus, since you’re already programming a temperature gauge into the Crock Pot, you could easily tweak it just a bit more and make a combination Sous Vide cooker, yogurt maker and Crock Pot in one…now that’s a useful appliance.

If you’re sick of leaving your hotel without a home-cooked breakfast, Natalie Tran has a solution. In this video, she shows you how to make oatmeal or soft boiled eggs with a coffee maker, and bacon and fried eggs with aluminum foil and an iron. He also offers an “I’m Feeling Lucky” feature that will provide you with any three liquids at random, providing for some disgustingly hilarious results.

Turn a Broken Wine Fridge Into a Fermentation Chamber

For most people, a broken wine fridge is little more than fodder for the closest landfill, but when Instructables user sklarm found out his neighbor was throwing away an old wine fridge, he jumped into action, hacking it into a top-notch fermentation chamber. By removing the cooling components and adding a lamp and temperature gauge, he was able to turn a piece of waste into an ideal chamber for fermenting bread, yogurt, kombucha and more. If you want to make your own, the process seems pretty straight forward even for the slightly-less tech savvy.

Homemade ice cream is so delicious, but making it can be so darn boring. What’s a geek to do?

While you can change up the flavors all you want, whatever you do, don’t forget your safety gear.

Going on a long road trip and don’t want to get stuck eating fast food? Why not take advantage of the heat generated by your engine? This great Manifold Stew recipe instructs you how to prepare a stew that can be cooked on your car’s engine by driving for about 4 or 5 hours. While it asks for squirrel, you city folk who find squirrel meat in short supply could try using rabbit or chicken in its place.

#2 Kedai Makanan Wing Heong

Another famous things to eat in Seri Kembangan is definitely Wing Heong’s chicken rice. Flocked with locals daily, people keep coming back for their roasted chicken and char siew! You can opt for normal white rice or oil rice which is a lot more fragrant. Their soup is another highlight, coconut chicken soup, no “ajinomoto” and super refreshing. Wing Heong offers a simple hearty meal that will make you come back for more.

What’s the best things to eat in Seri Kembangan during the hot days? ABC (air batu campur), our beloved local desserts. Here at ABC Ice House, you get a ton of options. From the typical ice kacang and chendul to dragonfruit shaved ice, there’s something for everyone. There’s a variety of fruits to add to your shaved ice, very refreshing, plus you get to enjoy it like a true local. No fancy seatings, no air conditioner, but a true neighbourhood. Probably one of the hidden things to eat in Seri Kembangan known only in the neighborhood, this place sells pretty good hokkien mee, also offering other Chinese fares. Well we’re here to tell you, stick to the hokkien mee will do, the rest might not reach your standard. The fragrant hokkien mee fried with wok hei and generous amount of ingredients has this silky texture. Dark and rich soy sauce adds flavors to it, try it for yourself.

Nestled in an industrial area, it’s possible to miss this place at first hunt. Combination of a studio and a cafe? Brilliant. The idea was to provide for the photographers and people working at the studio, but now has expanded to serving customers as well. Food over here is above average. That said, you could lay back and enjoy your quiet time over here at Take a Shot Studio Cafe, a break from the bustling city.

Yoke Heng Seafood Restaurant is known for their famous claypot Lou Shi Fan (silver needle noodle). Cooked in a claypot, the noodle soaks up all the flavors, and the thick consistency of the sauce gives it a fragrant, charred flavor. Their lala, marmite pork ribs are also very notable. They have two sections, one air-conditioned and one open seating. Get there early or make a booking to avoid disappointment especially during the weekend.

Their fried noodle and nasi lemak aren’t bad as well, overall it’s a good place for supper and chill.

This is no ordinary kopitiam, but a hybrid between kopitiam and cafe. Iron House Kopitiam was even featured in TV Show “Ho Chiak.” It has the rustic coffee shop vibe decorated aesthetically like a cafe, with a touch of nostalgia. You get to sample local fares with a better plating and at a better environment. Try out their nasi lemak, pan mee and desserts. We heard their fried chicken is bomb. Menu might be small but definitely enough for you to get a full meal.
