  1. Blend almond milk, frozen bananas, frozen strawberries and vanilla extract together in a blender until desired consistency is reached. Transfer mixture to a bowl and freeze until solid, about 4 hours.

This has a different frozen texture, loaded with good flavor, low in calories, carbs & fat. The best way to describe the texture is sort of like a frozen "slurpee." It also will melt very quickly (so eat fast), but you can certainly enjoy this guilt-free, so go ahead and have a second serving. Yeah, it may be a compromise to a rich ice cream, but I liked it!-07 Jun 2015

This was very easy to make with only a few healthy ingredients. I couldn't scoop any out once frozen, so it had to sit on the counter for about 15 minutes before I could shave bits off with a fork. This strange texture left me pining for something creamier, but at least it's a fairly guilt-free treat. I also made it for my 3 year old as a healthier alternative to ice cream, but unfortunately he didn't go for it. Maybe more suited for a popsicle mold.-28 Jul 2017


The Best Dairy Free Ice Cream

I quite literally ate a spoonful and tears of joy sprang to my eyes.

Okay, in my defense, I don’t eat ice cream that often. Store-bought dairy free ice cream is either packed with junk or way to expensive for me to buy right now.

And sometimes, making it at home seems like a drag even to me, who spends a good chunk of my 168 hours a week in the kitchen.

But when I initially brainstormed this recipe, I grew excited to give homemade ice cream another shot. Sure, I’ve made dairy free ice cream at home before, but not basic vanilla bean ice cream.

You might look at the ingredients list and assume it’s too complicated, but TRUST ME when I say homemade ice cream truly shines when you make it custard style. Creamy, scoopable, not-a-hopeless-block-of-ice ice cream warrants a smidge more work.

Of course, you absolutely can make the homemade dairy free vanilla bean ice cream just to nosh on. No floats required.


5-Minute Dairy-Free Ice Cream

Make this dairy-free, egg-free, and refined sugar-free homemade ice cream in your high-speed blender or food processor! It takes only 5 minutes. Serves 2. Easily doubled or tripled depending on size of food processor or blender.

Dairy-Free Chocolate Ice Cream

You all know I love ice cream by now – exhibits A, B, and C – but dairy doesn’t always do me favors. Yes, vegan ice creams do exist. However, coconut milk doesn’t always jibe with my system, either.

I was lamenting this fact to John recently when he suggested I try another recipe that’s dairy-free but without coconut. One milk that’s never done me wrong is almond milk, so I knew that would replace my half and half . And to keep it thick and creamy, I knew I would need a more traditional ice cream base.

To the drawing board I went.

This ice cream recipe is dairy-free, however, not vegan. I understand it’s not for everybody, but for those of us who are are OK with eating eggs but can’t have dairy, this is the recipe for you.

I started with an egg yolk and sugar base. Look how creamy it got!

Alton Brown taught me that I should look for the “ribbon effect” while whisking. I think I achieved that, eh?

Next I whisked the almond milk and cocoa powder in a saucepan over medium heat, tempered the eggs, and mixed it all together with a touch of xanthan gum for extra thickness and a hint of vanilla for more complex flavor. Into the ice cream maker it went and I got super stoked when I sampled a bite and it tasted dreamy. After a few hours in the freezer, it somehow got even better.

This ice cream is thick, creamy, sweet, and satisfying, even though it doesn’t have that stereotypical “creaminess” that comes from full-fat whipping cream. That’s the kind of thickness that pains my stomach anyway, so I’m OK with a different kind of luxurious (as long as I’m getting my ice cream fix).

This first experiment was a total success, so I I can’t wait to try even more flavors and mix-ins.


Whipped cream

This dairy-free whipped cream is easy to make—all you need is a can of coconut milk. Just refrigerate the coconut milk until it’s chilled, then use an electric mixer and beat until soft, fluffy peaks form. For extra flavor try adding a sweetener of your choice, vanilla extract, or a dash of cinnamon.

Buttermilk

This vegan buttermilk replicates buttermilk’s signature tang with a splash of apple cider vinegar. It’s easy to make at home. Try using it in vegan biscuits, mashed potatoes, or pancakes.

Sour cream

Nachos wouldn’t be the same without a drizzle of sour cream. Adding lime juice and cashews to this dairy-free version will bring the tart and creamy contrast that you’re craving to any dish.

Ice cream

To soothe your sweet tooth, try subbing in this fruity blueberry whip for dairy-based ice cream. All you need to make this at home is a blender. Buying frozen blueberries makes this dessert unbelievably easy.

Heavy cream

Heavy cream adds luxurious texture to sauces and soups. This dairy-free alternative uses cashews to replicate the decadent richness of cream. Soak your cashews in warm water for 2-3 hours for the best results.

Parmesan cheese

You’ve probably heard of using nutritional yeast as a dairy-free substitute for parmesan. This recipe starts with nutritional yeast, but then adds texture and flavor with nuts and garlic powder. It’s the perfect topping for vegan pastas and salads.

Tips for Dairy Free Ice Cream Recipes

If you don’t find the flavor of ice cream that you’re looking for right here – there are certain tips you can keep in mind to adapt an existing ice cream recipe into a non-dairy version.

You can use the vanilla non-dairy ice cream recipes that are listed right here on this page (either the coconut base or the soy base) as the base of your ice cream.

You can then substitute that dairy free ice cream base in any of the other recipes you find right here on Serving-Ice-Cream to make different flavors of ice cream.

Your imagination is literally the limit.

Keep in mind as you are adapting your own recipes that it is the fat content and the sugar content (along with the air that is mixed in during the process of making the ice cream) that helps to create the soft smooth texture of ice cream. So make sure that you have both fat and sugar in your ice cream or it will turn out icy.

Mashed avocado is a good addition. It is flavorless in the ice cream and helps to create that creamy texture.


How to Make Healthy Frozen Fruit Ice Cream

This recipe makes enough for 2 big servings or 4 small servings.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of diced frozen fruit of your choice but make sure you add at least half of a banana
  • 2 tablespoons of water
  • Optional: natural sprinkles or mini organic chocolate chips

Note: if you don’t have any frozen fruit, then peel and dice your fruit of choice and leave it in the freezer over night, or put it in the freezer in the morning if you’re planning to have this frozen treat at night.

Directions:

This recipe is so simple to make that your little ones can make it for you! Guide them through the process and let them make this healthy ice cream on their own.

Put the 2 cups of diced fruit into a food processor or blender. Then add 2 tablespoons of water.

Blend on high speed for a few minutes. You need to blend all the ingredients until the mixture is completely smooth and you don’t see any chunks.

You’ll know when it’s ready because it will look smooth, just like this:

Serve on a bowl and add sprinkles or mini chocolate chips, if you’re using any.
